About periodontal disease

HOW TO RECOGNIZE PERIODONTAL DISEASE?

The first sign of periodontal disease is so-called „everyday” symptoms such as bleeding or sensitive gums. Such symptoms usually appear when brushing or flossing. Any external injury can cause such symptoms as well (for example, when a toothbrush damages the gum), but one should be careful and monitor how the gum heals afterward.
On the other hand, a gum infection can occur, recognized by painful gums, redness, or duskiness, but bad breath, receding gums or loose teeth may also betray a periodontal problem.

Gingivitis

As a result of improper oral hygiene, bacteria multiply in plaque at the base of the tooth. Left untreated and/or in the case of genetic predisposition, it can become periodontal disease!

Periodontitis

This is inflammation of the tissue surrounding the root of the tooth, which if untreated may lead to loss of the tooth and bone-tissue. This occurs when the balance of bacteria in the mouth and the immune system is disturbed! No two cases are alike, because each of us is coded differently, and we live in differing conditions! Inflammation of the connective tissue of the root, focal disease, and droplet infection can be passed on to family members, too!
Causes: poor oral hygiene, genetic predisposition, smoking, stressful lifestyle (immune system) side-effects of medication (e.g. medicine to lower blood pressure, anti-epilepsy, immune-suppressive). It may appear together with general diseases such as those related to hormonal changes (puberty, pregnancy, postmenopausal diabetes), immune-deficiency conditions (AIDS), and diseases of the haematogenic system.
